Dr. Michael Ong is the Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System, and a Core Investigator at its HSR Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation and Policy (CSHIIP). He was the Hospitalist Chief at the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System from 2018-2022. Dr. Ong is also a Professor in Residence of Medicine & Public Health, and a practicing general internist at UCLA. His research interests focus on improving the delivery of appropriate and efficient health care by general internal medicine physicians. His research has applied this focus in several areas of general medicine, including health system-based care, technology, mental health, and tobacco control. Dr. Ong co-directed one of the eleven Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ)/Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Learning Health System (LHS) Center of Excellence in LHS Researcher Training programs, a K-12 program that trains LHS researchers in four Southern California health systems, including the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LACDHS). He has been Chair of the State of California Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee since 2009, which, among other activities, oversees the California Tobacco Control Program. Dr. Ong previously was the Principal Investigator for the Innovation Evaluation Committee that evaluated health care innovations implemented across all five University of California health systems through its Center for Health Quality and Innovation, and was also Director for UCLA Connected Health for four years, which facilitated UCLA Health's telemedicine, telehealth, and mHealth initiatives.
